Travel to Japan to be subsidised
May 27, 2020
Japan is seeking to revive its tourism sector as it emerges from the coronavirus crisis by subsidising certain holiday expenses.
The country’s Go To Travel initiative, The Guardian reports, will provide travellers discounts and vouchers worth up to ¥20,000 a day (£150).
Japan’s Kyodo news agency said the scheme would come into effect in the coming months after April tourism numbers fell more than 99%.
This week, Japan lifted its state of emergency, with various domestic and travel restrictions are expected to be eased steadily into July.
Restaurant opening hours are set to be extended, while some public attractions will be begin to reopen.
